Brian Stevens partnered with Mark Neuman to start Summit 1031 Exchange in 1991. Brian has been a licensed CPA for over 25 years, specializing in real estate taxation and has 16 years of exchange experience.
Brian is known in his profession as a capital gains tax specialist and is frequently invited by both professionals and universities to speak on topics such as 1031 Exchanges, Tenant in Common investments, private foundations and charitable remainder trusts. Brian is certified to provide continuing education classes for Realtors® and professionals in many states and has been a speaker at the National Association of Realtors Resort Symposium.
Brian received his MBA with a focus on Quantitative Methods from the University of Washington. He also holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Chemistry from Occidental College. Brian is an active member of the Oregon Society of CPAs (ORCPA) and the Federation of Exchange Accommodators (FEA) and was one of the first FEA members to receive the Certified Exchange Specialist designation in 2003.
Brian started his CPA career with 7 years at Moss Adams. In 1989, he partnered with Moss Adams colleague Mark Neuman to form Stevens and Neuman, a CPA firm in Bend, Oregon. In 1991, new IRS regulations governing 1031 exchanges encouraged Brian and Mark to create one of the first CPA-backed tax-deferred exchange companies in the country – Summit 1031 Exchange, Inc (formerly Summit Accommodators). Under their leadership Summit became one of the first 1031 exchange companies to receive errors and omissions and bonding insurance. In 2002, after growing Stevens and Neuman to 1400 clients, they sold their accounting practice to focus on the rapid growth of the exchange business. Summit now has offices in Oregon, Utah, Texas, Washington, Wyoming, Nevada and Montana and has handled over 10,000 exchange closings worth over 1 billion dollars.
As an investor and entrepreneur, Brian is involved in many successful ventures including a number of real estate investments and companies. His current and past endeavors range across industries including financial services, wood products, real estate development, automotive parts, sports equipment, and office products. Brian enjoys skiing and other outdoor activities. He is a frequent sponsor of community athletic events in Bend, Oregon, where he resides with his wife and their eight children.
Brian works in our Bend, Oregon location, and can be reached at brian@summit1031.com or at 800-909-1031.
